Watercresson
April 24, 2008
We owe a very large thank you to the Roullier family for sharing two hidden treats in the Plaine: watercress, and wild garlic. This makes a delightful salad, that when anointed with Italy’s finest, and a few Maffay walnuts, makes one very happy that three of four ingredients are within five minutes’ walking range.
Also we thank the Roullier family for supporting our upstairs. Monsieur Roullier père found us an old oak post at the Très Grande Chevrolais, and Monsieur Monnier’s son came by one lunchtime and sanded it, and then Pierre-Yvès and Mr. Roullier chiseled and worked it into place, using a great hoist that looks like it came into being in the 1800s. And so we can have a big party in the upstairs of the house now, and the floor won’t fall down. And Gabriel won’t be reduced to only having skinny girlfriends. And then Pierre-Yvès dismantled the barn and found a curved oak joist, which we’ll also sand, and mount.
Today we discovered, again with Monsieur Roullier’s help, that we actually have cresson in our little river. So I brought some more over from the secret hiding place, and planted it in the water and hopefully it will take root.
